How the SCUBAzen weight estimator works

The SCUBAzen weight estimator is named zenfinder. Zenfinder is designed to get a diver within 2 pounds (1 kilogram) of their ideal weight, which is close enough that a diver makes a small surface adjustment rather than beginning a dive guessing.

Zenfinder calculates from four values a diver enters for the specific dive: body weight, exposure suit, fresh or salt water, and tank type. Zenfinder does not read the diver's dive history. Scuba weighting depends on several variables at once: a 5mm wetsuit displaces more than a 3mm, a steel tank behaves differently from an aluminium one, and salt water is more buoyant than fresh. A generic weighting table collapses those variables into a single figure, which is why answering for the specific dive produces a closer estimate.

What overweighting costs a diver

The advice that it is better to be too heavy than too light is common among recreational divers, and it carries measurable costs.

Correct weighting reverses these effects. A correctly weighted diver achieves longer dives, easier swimming, less buoyancy correction, and more attention available for the dive itself.

How the SCUBAzen wetsuit estimator works

The SCUBAzen wetsuit estimator recommends a wetsuit thickness for the water temperature a diver expects. Suit thickness and weighting are linked: thicker neoprene is more buoyant and therefore requires more lead, so establishing the suit first is what makes a weight estimate meaningful.

Alongside its recommendation, the wetsuit estimator lists the diver's own previously logged dives at a similar water temperature, showing what that diver wore on each and any notes recorded at the time. The estimate itself comes from the water temperature entered; the dive list is a lookup the diver reads for themselves. Two divers in the same 24°C water can genuinely require different suits, because cold tolerance, dive duration, and body composition differ between individuals. A temperature chart cannot capture that difference. A diver's own record of what they wore in the same water can.

Why a SCUBAzen estimate can still be wrong

A SCUBAzen weight estimate is calculated from the values entered for that dive, so an estimate that looks wrong usually means one of those inputs is wrong. The most common causes are an incorrect suit thickness, the wrong tank type, or fresh water selected instead of salt.

Some variables no calculation accounts for. A wetsuit compressed by several hundred dives is less buoyant than a new one of the same thickness. An unfamiliar rental BCD holds a different amount of air. Individual breathing pattern changes buoyancy through the dive. A surface buoyancy check is what resolves these, which is why an estimate is a starting point rather than a final figure.

SCUBAzen records whether a diver was over-weighted on a dive and how cold the diver felt, so that record is available the next time the diver prepares for similar water. If an estimate remains wrong against what a diver actually dived, reporting that specific dive along with the weight or suit actually used improves the calculation.
