# Find your wetsuit

> Get a suit recommendation for a water temperature, adjusted for how cold you run and what you logged.

The **wetsuit** tab recommends a suit for a water temperature. It starts from a ladder of seven temperature bands, shifted by whether you run cold, average or warm, then adjusts the answer from what you logged in similar water, and tells you why in one sentence.

## Get a recommendation

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the wetsuit tab">
    In Zenfinder, tap **wetsuit** in the switch at the top. See [Zenfinder](/docs/zenfinder/index).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the water temperature">
    Under **conditions**, use the minus and plus buttons beside **water temp**. This is the same temperature the logbook tab uses.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Say how you run">
    Under **you run**, choose **cold**, **average** or **warm**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the answer">
    The suit appears at the top under **suit**, with a sentence explaining it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The ladder

The ladder lists seven bands, from **no suit** in the warmest water to **neoprene drysuit** in the coldest. The band for your temperature is marked. By default you see that band and its neighbours; tap **show all seven bands** to see the whole ladder, and **show fewer bands** to fold it again.

For **average**, the bands are:

| Suit | °C | °F |
| - | - | - |
| **no suit** | 28 and up | 82 and up |
| **shorty** | 25 to 27 | 77 to 81 |
| **3 mm** | 22 to 24 | 72 to 76 |
| **5 mm** | 17 to 21 | 63 to 71 |
| **7 mm** | 10 to 16 | 50 to 62 |
| **semi-dry** | 5 to 9 | 41 to 49 |
| **neoprene drysuit** | below 5 | below 41 |

**cold** moves every band to a thicker suit, so at most temperatures you're recommended one suit warmer than **average** would give. **warm** can pick a thinner suit than **average** between 14 and 27 °C (57 and 81 °F); colder or warmer than that, it gives the same suit as **average**. The hint under **you run** says the same, in the units the toggle shows. The ladder on the page always shows the bands for your current setting, in the units the toggle shows.

## How you run

**you run** is yours to set. Zenfinder doesn't change it for you.

If your logbook disagrees with your setting, the line under the control says so, for example "your log leans cold: 3 of 4 dives. tap cold to shift the ladder." This appears when at least two of your dives have a cold or warm **warmth felt** and at least three in five of them agree. Otherwise the line explains what the control does.

## How your logged dives change the answer

After the ladder picks a band, Zenfinder reads the dives you logged within 2 degrees of the temperature that have a suit in their **wetsuit** field and a **warmth felt** verdict. A reading of exactly 0 is read on imported dives only; on a dive logged in the app it's left out, because older versions of the app saved 0 for a skipped temperature (see [Your logbook as a reference](/docs/zenfinder/logbook)).

* **A cold verdict** (**cold** or **very cold**) in a suit at least as warm as the ladder's suit says the ladder's suit is too thin. The answer moves one step up the ladder from the warmest suit you were cold in.
* **A warm verdict** (**warm** or **very warm**) in a suit no warmer than the ladder's suit says it's too much. The answer moves one step down the ladder from the coolest suit you were warm in.
* **Verdicts that agree with the ladder** don't move it: cold in a thinner suit, or warm in a thicker one.
* **If both directions appear**, the one with more dives wins. A tie leaves the ladder's answer.
* **zen** never moves the answer.

A single cold dive can move the answer if nothing contradicts it. The sentence under the suit always names the suit and number of dives behind the change, for example "you logged cold in a 3 mm near this temperature on 1 dive, so 5 mm." If you disagree, change the answer with **choose a different suit**.

Next to each band, chips such as **cold ×2** count the dives you logged in that band in exactly that band's suit. The **shorty** band never shows chips, because the logbook's **wetsuit** field has no shorty option and a logged 3 mm is a full suit.

To give Zenfinder more to work with, fill in **wetsuit** and **warmth felt** when you log your dives. See [Log a dive](/docs/logbook/log-a-dive).

### While your logbook loads

The ladder's answer doesn't need your logbook, so it shows straight away. Until your dives arrive, the sentence says "reading your logbook…". If they can't be loaded, it says "couldn't read your logbook, so the ladder stands alone." and shows **retry**.

## Add the suit to the weight calc

The wetsuit answer doesn't change the weight tab until you say so.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check what it replaces">
    Under **for the weight calc**, the line below the button says what the suit will replace on the weight tab, for example "replaces 3 mm full suit", or "the weight calc already wears this."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap add to weight calc">
    Tap **add to weight calc**. Zenfinder moves to the **weight** tab wearing the recommended suit.
  </Step>
</Steps>

To use a different suit, tap **choose a different suit** and pick one from the list. It goes on the weight tab the same way.

The suit replaces every body piece on the weight tab (suits, tops and bottoms). Your hood, gloves and boots stay as they were, and the suit keeps the age your previous suit had.

A note on the weight tab says what was replaced, with **restore previous kit** to put it back. The button stays until you change the kit yourself. See [Estimate your weight](/docs/zenfinder/weight).

<Warning>
  The tab says "estimate. test it before you dive." Check your weighting at the surface before you descend. For more on weighting, see [scubazenapp.com/weighting](https://scubazenapp.com/weighting).
