# Your logbook as a reference

> Find past dives near today's water temperature and reuse what you wore and carried.

The **logbook** tab in Zenfinder lists every dive you logged within 2 degrees of a water temperature you set, with the suit, belt weight and how warm and well weighted you felt. Tap **use this dive** to start the weight tab from one of them.

## Find dives near a temperature

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the logbook tab">
    Open Zenfinder and tap **logbook** in the switch at the top (it opens here). See [Zenfinder](/docs/zenfinder/index).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the water temperature">
    Under **water**, use the minus and plus buttons beside **water temp** to set today's water.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the count">
    The line under the stepper says how many dives fall in the window, for example "3 dives between 24 °C and 28 °C".
  </Step>
</Steps>

The window is 2 degrees either side of the temperature, in whichever unit the units toggle shows. Only dives with a water temperature in the log can match. A reading of exactly 0 counts on dives you brought in with [import](/docs/logbook/import). On a dive logged in the app, a 0 is left out, because older versions of the app saved 0 for a temperature you skipped and the two can't be told apart. The newest dive is listed first.

The water temperature is shared across Zenfinder, so the wetsuit tab uses whatever you set here.

## What a dive tile shows

Each matching dive appears under **my dives** as one tile:

* **The top line:** the dive site (or the location, if there's no site), and the dive number and date.
* **The figures:** the water temperature, the suit from the dive's **wetsuit** field, and the belt weight. The temperature and belt weight follow the units toggle. A belt weight logged before the logbook recorded units is shown as stored, with no unit.
* **The verdicts:** what you chose for **warmth felt** and **weighting felt** when you logged the dive, such as **cold** or **heavy**. A dive with no verdict shows no chip.

<Note>
  Dives saved before the logbook stopped choosing **zen** for you can show **warmth · zen** or **weight · zen** whether or not you picked it. Zenfinder shows these faintly and never uses them to change an answer.
</Note>

Tap the tile itself to open the dive. To fill in the suit or verdicts on an older dive, see [View, edit or delete a dive](/docs/logbook/edit-dive).

## See what you wore on a dive

If you filled in the dive's **gear used** page, the tile has a **gear used** pill. Tap it to see that dive's equipment in a sheet, titled with the dive number, grouped as **exposure protection**, **basics**, **life support** and **extras**. Items you ticked are highlighted; the rest are faded and struck through.

The sheet has its own **use this dive** button. See [Gear used on a dive](/docs/logbook/dive-equipment).

## Use this dive

**use this dive** starts the weight tab from that dive. It works as a blank slate plus the dive:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Tap use this dive">
    Tap **use this dive** on the tile, or in the **gear used** sheet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the weight tab">
    Zenfinder moves to the **weight** tab. A note under the estimate says what came from the dive, for example "from dive #142: water temp, water type, suit, tank. everything else at default."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the rest">
    Everything the dive didn't record is back at its default. Go through the form and change anything that's different this time.
  </Step>
</Steps>

What the dive can fill in:

| Field | Where it comes from |
| - | - |
| Water temperature | The dive's water temperature |
| Water type | Salt or fresh, if recorded |
| Suit | The dive's **wetsuit** field |
| Tank | The tank's size and material, matched to the nearest size the weight tab offers |
| Hood and gloves | The dive's **gear used** page, if it has one |

Your body measurements (weight, height, age, sex and body fat) are never changed. Boots, backplate, first stage, adapter and fins go back to their defaults, because a dive doesn't record them. If the dive has no equipment page, the note adds "this dive has no equipment page, so hood and gloves are off."

The estimate also shows what you carried and felt on that dive, for example "dive #142 carried 6 kg and logged heavy". That line is there to compare against, not as an input. Tap it to open the dive.

If you change the kit after this, the note shrinks to what still comes from the dive ("still from dive #142: ..."), and disappears when nothing does.

### Undo use this dive

The note has a **restore previous kit** button that puts back the kit you had before. It stays until you change the kit yourself; after that, the kit is yours and the button goes. See [Estimate your weight](/docs/zenfinder/weight).

## When nothing matches

When no dive falls in the window, the tab tells you where your record is:

* **"nearest: 3 dives at 28 °C"** (with your own numbers): tap the line and the stepper counts to that temperature, then the dives appear.
* **"none of your dives has a water temperature logged yet. add one to a dive and it shows here."** None of your dives has a water temperature. Add one when you edit or log a dive.
* **"your logged water temperatures all fall outside -2 °C to 40 °C, so none can show here. check them in your logbook."** Your dives have temperatures, but every one is outside the stepper's range (28 to 104 °F in Fahrenheit). That's usually a typo, such as 300 for 30. Open the dive in your logbook and correct it.
* **"no dives logged yet."** Your logbook is empty. See [Log a dive](/docs/logbook/log-a-dive).

## If something doesn't load

* If your dives can't be loaded, the tab says so and shows **retry**. Check your connection and tap it.
* If the gear used on your dives can't be loaded, the tiles still show, but without **gear used** pills, and a note says "couldn't load the gear used on your dives, so it isn't shown." Tap **retry** in the note.
