# Zenfinder

> Work out your wetsuit and weight for a dive from your body, your kit and your logbook.

Zenfinder answers two questions before the first dive of a trip: what suit to wear in this water, and how much lead to carry. It has three tabs (your logbook, a wetsuit finder and a weight finder), and every answer it gives is an estimate to check at the surface before you dive.

## When to use it

Zenfinder is built for the start of a new trip, at the dive site or the night before. Your last dive was usually somewhere else in different water, so nothing is copied over from it automatically. You set the water temperature and your kit for this trip, and Zenfinder works from those.

If you want to start from a dive you've already logged, you can choose one on the logbook tab. See [Your logbook as a reference](/docs/zenfinder/logbook).

## Open Zenfinder

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the menu">
    On home, open the menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap zenfinder">
    Tap **zenfinder**. It opens on the **logbook** tab.
  </Step>
</Steps>

When home shows a water temperature for your trip, tapping that reading also opens Zenfinder, set to that water temperature. See [Home and the menu](/docs/get-started/home).

## The three tabs

The switch at the top of the page moves between three tabs. Each one works on its own, and all three share the same water temperature.

| Tab | What it answers | Page |
| - | - | - |
| **logbook** | What you wore and carried on your own dives in water like this | [Your logbook as a reference](/docs/zenfinder/logbook) |
| **wetsuit** | Which suit to wear at this temperature, adjusted for how you run and what you logged | [Find your wetsuit](/docs/zenfinder/wetsuit) |
| **weight** | How much lead to carry for your body, the water, your suit and your gear | [Estimate your weight](/docs/zenfinder/weight) |

The tabs pass work to each other. On the wetsuit tab, **add to weight calc** puts the recommended suit on the weight tab. On the logbook tab, **use this dive** fills the weight tab from a logged dive.

## Every answer is an estimate

The wetsuit and weight tabs both carry the line "estimate. test it before you dive." The figures are a starting point for your own checks.

<Warning>
  Check your weighting at the surface before you descend, and adjust it. A suit, tank or body measurement that differs from what you entered changes the answer, and Zenfinder can't see the water you're actually in.
</Warning>

For what correct weighting means and why it matters, see [scubazenapp.com/weighting](https://scubazenapp.com/weighting).

Until you close it, a tip under the tab switch explains that the figures are a starting point from your body and kit, that the weight estimate doesn't read your logbook, and that the wetsuit answer does, from how warm you felt on dives in similar water. Tap its close button to hide it. The weight estimate is worked out only from what you enter on the weight tab.

## The units toggle

The toggle in the top bar has two settings: **°C · kg** and **°F · lb**. One tap switches every figure on the page at once: the water temperature, your height and body weight, the weight estimate, and the belt weights shown from your logged dives.

If you log in kilograms and the boat works in pounds, switch Zenfinder to **°F · lb** for the week. Your logbook keeps its own units.

How it chooses:

* The first time you open Zenfinder, the toggle follows the weight unit in your app settings. See [Units and sizes](/docs/settings/units-and-sizes).
* Once you change the toggle in Zenfinder, Zenfinder keeps your choice. Changing the units in settings afterwards doesn't change it.
* Whenever Zenfinder's units differ from your units setting, a line under the tab switch says so, for example "zenfinder shows °F · lb, set by the switch at the top. your logbook keeps your units setting." Switch the toggle back to match your settings and the line goes.

When you flip the toggle, your height and body weight are converted in place. Height can move by a centimetre when you flip to inches and back, because inches are coarser. Check the figure and correct it if needed.

## What Zenfinder remembers

Zenfinder keeps your last session between visits: the water temperature, how you run, your body measurements, the units toggle and the kit on the weight tab. These are saved with your account, so they come back when you sign in on another phone.

It always opens on the **logbook** tab.
