# Add a trip

> Add your next trip on home with where you're going and your out and back dates, then edit or remove it from the pencil.

Tap **add a trip** at the bottom of home, type where you're going, pick your **out** and **back** dates, and tap **save**. Home then checks your kit, paperwork, insurance and gear against that trip until you're home.

## Add your trip

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the trip sheet">
    On home, tap **add a trip**. On your first visit you can also tap **add your next trip** under **start here**. The sheet is titled **add your trip**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Say where">
    Type the destination in **where**. It's free text, up to 80 characters, so write it the way you'd say it: "Raja Ampat", "Cozumel" or "Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt".
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick your dates">
    Tap **out** and choose the day you leave, then tap **back** and choose the day you come home. **back** stays greyed out until **out** has a date.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Tap **save**. It only becomes available once all three fields are filled in and the dates make sense.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Home switches to your trip: the destination, a countdown, your dates, and the checks described in [Get ready for a trip](/docs/trips/readiness).

## The rules the sheet follows

| Rule | What it means |
| - | - |
| All three fields are required | **save** stays unavailable until **where**, **out** and **back** are set. |
| No past trips | The calendar starts at today. You can't add a trip that has already happened. |
| **back** can't be before **out** | The **back** calendar starts at your **out** date. If you move **out** past your **back** date, **back** is cleared so you pick it again. |
| How far ahead | The calendar runs to January 1, five years from the current year. |
| Nearest trip first | If you have more than one trip on file, home shows the one that's next or under way. |

The destination also decides whether home can show a water temperature for your trip. See [Get ready for a trip](/docs/trips/readiness#water-temperature).

## Add another trip

With a trip on home, tap **add another trip** under its dates to book the one after it. The sheet opens empty.

Home still shows the nearest trip. The next one appears as a single line under the dates, for example "then Bonaire · march 4". With more than one trip after it, the line also counts the rest, for example "then Bonaire · march 4 · +1 more". If two trips leave the same day, home shows one of them and names the other on this line.

## Edit or remove your trip

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the trip">
    On home, tap the pencil beside the destination. The sheet opens titled **your trip**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change it">
    Edit **where**, **out** or **back**, then tap **save**. For a trip that has already started, the **out** calendar keeps the original departure date as its earliest day.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Or remove it">
    Tap **remove trip** at the bottom of the sheet, then **remove trip** again in the **remove this trip?** dialog.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Removing a trip deletes it. There's no undo. If you have another trip on file, home moves on to the next one and keeps checking against it.
</Warning>

The **remove this trip?** dialog says what happens next. If it's your only trip, it says your readiness checks will stop until you add another one. If another trip is still ahead, it says your other trips stay and the readiness checks follow the nearest one.

To edit or remove a later trip, tap the "then" line under the dates on home. With one later trip, it opens the same sheet for that trip. With more, it opens **later trips**, a list of every trip booked after the one home is showing; tap one to open its sheet.

## Closing the sheet

The sheet doesn't close with a downward swipe. Tap **cancel**, tap outside the sheet, or use your phone's back gesture. While a save is in progress the sheet stays open until the save finishes.

## Saving without a connection

Trips save to your account, so they're on any phone you sign in on. With no connection, the sheet waits up to 12 seconds, then closes and home tells you the trip was saved on your phone and will sync when you're back online. A removal works the same way.

If a save fails, the sheet stays open with what you typed and shows a message saying it couldn't save your trip. If a removal fails, the message says it couldn't remove your trip and that it's still there, so you can try again.

## After the trip

For seven days after your **back** date, home shows the trip as "welcome back" with a count of dives logged from it and a **log a dive from the trip** button. The pencil still edits it. After that week, home goes back to **no trip planned** and you can add the next one.
