# A piece of gear

> Add a piece of gear with its type, model, serial number and receipt, set its service interval and reminders, and see its service history.

Each piece of gear has its own page with three parts: its **service history**, its **reminders** (the next service and up to two reminders of your own) and its **details**. To add one, tap **add gear** on the gear list, choose the **gear type**, fill in what you know, and tap **save**. SCUBAzen doesn't send notifications, but any reminder can go into your phone's calendar with one tap.

## Add a piece of gear

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the form">
    On the gear list, tap **add gear** (or the **+** at the top right). The form is titled **add gear**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the gear type">
    Under **details**, pick from **gear type**. This is the only required field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the details you have">
    **model**, **serial number**, **purchase date**, **notes**, and a photo under **proof of purchase**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the reminders">
    Under **reminders**, choose a **service interval** and check the **next service** date. See below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Tap **save** at the top right. You go back to the gear list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If you tap **save** without a type, the app says "choose a gear type before saving".

### Gear types

bcd, backup computer, camera, compass, computer, drysuit, fins, gloves, hood, knife, lights, mask, octopus, pressure gauge, regulator, SMB, snorkel, speargun, tank, weightbelt and wetsuit. The list is in alphabetical order in your language.

### Field limits

**model** and **serial number** hold up to 80 characters, **notes** up to 2,000, and a reminder's label up to 40. When a field reaches its limit, typing stops and a line under the field says so, for example "80 characters max". The **purchase date** can't be in the future.

## Reminders

| Reminder | What it is |
| - | - |
| **next service** | When this gear is next due. The gear list and home use this date, and your own reminders when one is due sooner. |
| **service interval** | How far ahead a logged regular service sets the next one: 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or 5 years. New gear starts at 1 year. |
| Your own reminders | Two extra rows, each with a label (**enter label...**) and a date, for anything else, such as a tank's hydro test. |

The **service interval** only appears while you're editing.

### The suggested next service

While you're adding gear, picking a **purchase date** fills in **next service** for you: the purchase date plus the service interval. Changing the interval moves the suggestion with it, and clearing the purchase date removes it.

As soon as you pick or clear the **next service** date yourself, the suggestion stops and your date stays.

On gear you've already saved, changing the interval moves **next service** too: it becomes the gear's latest regular service (or, with none logged, its purchase date) plus the new interval. If you set **next service** yourself, changing the interval leaves your date alone.

### How the next service date moves

Logging a **regular service** sets the next service to the service date plus this gear's interval, unless it's older than a regular service you've already logged. Other service types (cleaning, repair, inspection, other) don't change it. See [Log a service](/docs/gear/log-service).

You can also edit **next service** directly: tap the pencil, change the date, and tap **save**. Tap the **×** beside a reminder to remove it.

### Add a reminder to your calendar

Due and overdue gear shows on the gear list and on home. That includes your own reminders: a reminder that's overdue or due within 30 days, such as a tank's hydro test, marks the gear **overdue** or **due soon** just as **next service** does.

SCUBAzen doesn't send notifications. To get an alert, add the reminder to your phone's calendar:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the gear">
    Open the gear from the gear list. Reminders with a date show in the **reminders** section.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap calendar">
    Tap **calendar** beside the reminder. Your phone's calendar opens with a new event filled in, named after the reminder and the gear.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check and save the event">
    The event is an all-day event on the reminder's date, so any alert follows your calendar's setting for all-day events. Add or change the alert if you want one, then save it in your calendar.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The calendar event is a copy. If you change the date in SCUBAzen later, change the calendar event too.

## Service history

Saved gear shows its **service history** first: each logged service with its type, who did it, and the date, newest first. The section heading shows how many there are. Tap **log service** to add one, or tap a row to open it.

The service history appears only after the gear is saved, so save new gear before logging its first service.

At the top of the page, the gear's type and model sit above two dates: **last serviced** (the most recent service in the history) and the next service, marked **overdue** or **due soon** when it needs attention.

## Edit gear

Tap the pencil at the top right. Every field becomes editable; tap **save** when you're done, or the **×** at the top to stop. If you changed something, the app asks "discard your changes?".

Saving works offline. The app tells you the gear is saved on your phone and will sync when you're back online. Adding a **proof of purchase** photo needs a connection.

## Delete gear

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start editing">
    Open the gear and tap the pencil.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Delete">
    Scroll to the foot of the page and tap **delete gear**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The app asks "delete this gear?". Tap **delete**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Deleting gear removes the gear, its whole service history, and their photos (proof of purchase and work orders) from your account. It can't be undone. Photos saved on your phone aren't touched.

  Deleting gear needs a connection. Offline, the app says so and nothing is deleted.
</Warning>

If the connection drops partway through, the app says it couldn't confirm the delete and asks you to check your gear list to see what happened.
